“Unapologetically Nêhiyaw”: A conversation with Max FineDay






As the editor-in-chief of the Ontario Library Association (OLA) magazine Open Shelf, I have been excited to be working with Samantha Martin-Bird, the Indigenous Relationships Supervisor at the Thunder Bay Public Library. 

Over the past six months, Sam has been doing a podcast for Open Shelf, where she interviews librarians, researchers and activists about Indigenous issues. 

This month, she has a conversation with Max FineDay, the executive director of Canadian Roots Exchange, an organization that runs reconciliation programs for Indigenous youth across Canada. Their conversation is entitled “Unapologetically Nêhiyaw” and I think it contributes in a good way to relationship building and discussions about reconciliation.

Mapping stereotypes

Maps are powerful data visualization tools that can promote important conversations about a range of topics human settlements and watersheds to how we think about the world. Case in point: This World War I vintage map of Europe.   This map is currently on display in the Carleton University Library, along with other maps such as The world according to Americans (2009)  that capture human judgement and bias and other library materials that can be used to open up conversations about stereotyping and discrimination. The display continues to generate important conversations among students as well as between students and library staff. Here's a story about this exhibit: The world according to ... whom? New research databases: February 2023

  This beautiful grey owl perched on a tree at the edge of our "Back 40" earlier this week. Patient, still, maybe sleeping? Definitely interested in the activity in the small stretch of open water below their vantage point. Kind of like a researcher, waiting to see what will transpire ...
