Off-campus login: New look this week

Image
We’re updating the look of our off-campus (proxy) login page to reflect the new look of the library website. You’ll log in the same way you always have, so there’s no change for you other than the look. Changes will take effect on Wednesday, June 26. We wanted to give you a bit of a heads-up so you know you’re in the right place when you see a different page than what you’re used to. Any questions or concerns? Use our  feedback form .

Book fall and winter teaching now

Image
Summer is upon us ... and soon the fall and winter terms. Not that I am wishing our lives away, but if you are interested in booking research skills sessions in your class(s) for the upcoming academic year, I am too.  I will be on campus in July but away most of August so will be planning for the fall in the upcoming weeks.  I can be reached at martha.attridgebufton@carleton.ca or extension 2985.

Collection highlight: 2 new Indigenous film series

Image
Coming soon to our library collection: Skindidgenous and Future History . We have purchased two film series from McIntyre Media: Skindigenous "From a remote mountain village in the Northern Philippines, Wang Od Oggay carries on the tattooing tradition of her ancestors, offering those who come to her the sacred markings that were once reserved for the women and warriors of the Kalinga people." Future History "Archaeologist/Artist Kris Nahrgang, and Dancer/Activist Sarain Carson Fox share their personal origin stories and talk about where they are at in their own journey of identity. After visiting Traditional Teacher Isaac Murdoch at Nimkii Aazhbikoong Culture Camp in Elliot Lake, Kris takes Sarain on an underwater diving exploration near his community in Lovesick Lake and Sarain brings Kris to meet her dad, Chief of the Eastern Doorway of the Three Fires Midewiwin Lodge Jim Dumont, in Shawanaga First Nation." To access these films, go to the libr...

We are moving ahead with the implementation of our new search system. Here are answers to some questions you might have as the system as you start planning for the Fall 2019 academic term. When does the new system go live? December 10, 2019. The date is fixed because we are collaborating with 13 other Ontario universities. Can I still link to materials via Summon and the catalogue in my course syllabi? Do not link to resources in Summon or the catalogue in course syllabi. Link to articles via a database.  Can I link to Ares and databases in my syllabi? Yes. There will be no change to course reserves (i.e., Ares) and database links. Will the changes affect course reserves and interlibrary loan services? Generally, course reserves and interlibrary loan services will not be affected. Will the catalogue still be available? Instead of having both Summon and the catalogue, the two tools will be integrated into the single new improved system. When should I order c...

Library website: Refreshed!

Image
Our refreshed library website is now "live."  As I mentioned in an earlier post, the good news is that it's a cleaner look and all your favourite links are still available, such as subject guides and library reserves. And if you're looking for the catalogue (a personal favourite), you find it by clicking on Search in the top right-hand corner of the page. Here's the link to the website and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me (martha.attridgebufton@carleton.ca) or give me a call at extension 2985.

Grief in the workplace

Image
Our colleagues die. And this experience is disruptive, unsettling, sad. Sometimes we still work in places where our grief is disenfranchised--"Don't cry here." "Move on with your life and your job." "No more than three days off." And sometimes we are in a workplace where grieving is recognized as a fundamental human experience that we shouldn't (or can't) compartmentalize. One of my departmental colleagues died last month. Here's a story about what happened in my workplace. In a nutshell, we've been offered comfort. Photo by Miguel Bruna on Unsplash.
