December 10, 2019: Library will have new search system

The changes to the Carleton University Library discovery system are moving forward. By December 10, 2019, how you search will look different while still giving you access to all the materials in the library collections.

The two big takeaways at this point are:

1. For the fall term, faculty should avoid using links for Summon (library search tool) or the catalogue to resources in their syllabi—just use titles.
2. Please note that course reserves and direct database links will still work.
3. More details are contained in the attached document and the library Collaborative Futures website will have regular updates

How can you prepare for the new system?

Incremental changes will be occurring throughout the fall semester and faculty should plan their syllabi accordingly. Faculty with full-year courses should note that links to the library catalogue (links that start with http://catalogue.library.carleton.ca) and Summon will no longer work after December 10. Interlibrary loans, ARES (course reserves), and direct database links will not be affected by these changes.

Any Reserve materials needed in the fall semester should be placed as soon as possible. 

Between November and December 10, new purchases will be suspended, and no new information will be entered into the existing library catalogue. Faculty should plan any purchases early. 

What could the new system look like?

Here are some university library sites using Primo, the new search system we are adopting. Use these sites to get a feel for how searching in Primo works.

We will not know for some months how Carleton’s discovery system (i.e., Primo) will look, but  CalState,Channel Islands, CTW, Trinity College and CSCU, Charter Oak State College are good examples of how our interface could look.
